QA: Packing

Saturday is devoted to packing. As Alistair Appleton always say in the "Cash In The Attic", lets start cracking with the packing!

Earlier on Thursday, I went to FedEx to pick up the 25kg boxes. Luckily Ram's wife, Sree works there, so the services is faster. I am entitled to air ship 300lbs (~ 130kg) of my stuff. Since I don't have much things to ship, two of the boxes are filled with Diva's and Zal's stuff. :-)

I have a very hard time to decide which one should go in checked in luggage and what are to go in a courier. The courier will take around 3-4 days depending on the custom clearance.

I planned for the pick-up to come tomorrow, just in case I have more things to tuck inside the boxes.. :-))

QA: The Farewell Dinner

Friday night, my friends in Doha threw a farewell party for me. It is so nice of them. Zal organised all these and Ritz Carlton Ramadhan Tent is the choice. I have told Zal I wanted to go there before I left, so he organized for a farewell dinner there.

Actually, I felt guilty about it since it is among the most expensive Ramadhan Tent in Doha.. QR185 ++ per pax. And 15 of my friends agreed to come and willing to pay that much.. I am touched! So, I secretly made a deal with the waiter to ensure I get the bill first before others. The waiter understood it and I paid half of the bill. Even more, the next day (Saturday) was a working day for some of us. And those people willing to stay back until 3am... what a sacrifice...

Another surprised I received that night were presents from some of them. Apparently when Diva and Sha flew to IAD (both of them just landed at 7pm), the team (my other friends) has already planned for them to buy present for me. They decided to buy shirts and thats explained why during the packing I realised my Hard Rock Bahrain polo was missing. Zal secretly took it from my wardrobe and gave them to Diva as a sample for size.

To Diva and Sha, I know your one day lay-over at IAD was spent to just look for the shirts. Well, there will be another IAD in your roster in months to come.. I really appreciate it.. thanks a million...

Some photos during the dinner..

To all my friends in Doha, thank you soooo much for the memorable night! And thank you very much for the presents.. :-)

QA: A Gift from a Colleague

Had iftar with Bahgat, his wife Mervat and our colleague, Ahmed at Al-Bandar Restaurant. Al-Bandar Restaurant used to be by the gulf along the Corniche. However it was demolished as part of Doha beautification project. Now, it has reopened at Souq Waqif along side other restaurants. I heard that the one and only Malaysian restaurant, "Seri Kebaya" to open there as well. "Seri Kebaya" is part of the Malaysian Kitchen programme franchise and plan to open on after Eid.

Thank you Bahgat, Mervat and Ahmed for the iftar and the gift. It is beautiful... something to remind me about Qatar :-))

QA: Final Weekend

Weekend in Qatar starts on Thursday night.. and the best way to start your weekend is to have a good iftar at Shahrin's place. His wife, Nadia cooked sup tulang, daging bakar and ayam bakar. It was really really good.

Later into the night, what else... shopping... bought a pair of Hugo Boss shoes and a same brand belt for BH.

Then, hang out at usual place, Coffee Beanery which was packed like a can of sardine. Later, we moved to Taly near the airport for sahoor...

Friday- packing time! And I think Saturday would be the same too :-))

Boxes are ready to be packed for air shipment and luggage for checked-in... I requested for additional luggage allowance from Qatar Airways and being Qatar Airways, you never ever put high expectation.. so, I have to squeeze everything for 30kg allowance only.. hopefully I can put as much as my stuff for the air shipment.

QA: A Gift from the Team

My project team kept on pushing me to allow them to do a farewell dinner for me. Until they consulted the Project Manager and she issued an order to organize a dinner. I have no choice and to agree with it.

Ray booked a table at Sheraton Ramadan Tent for about 15 people - which represent three-quarter of my project team size.

The Ramadan Tent was only a quarter full, maybe due to week nights. Three years in Qatar, I have attended three Ramadan Tent and the best is The Ritz Carlton Ramadan Tent. And I am going there again on Friday night for sahoor.

To all my office/team mates, Tauseef, Samir,Hussain, Shahira, Ahmed, Aziz, Ray, Richard, Katrin, Heba, Stephanie, Mahdi, Bill, Barbara, David, GraceAnn, Bahgat (hmm...do I miss anyone?) :-)

- Thank you very much for the wonderful three years in Doha! -

QA: Ramadan Bazaar

A group of us participated in Ramadan Bazaar at the Malaysian Embassy compound. Our stall, named MBQ which stands for Malaysian Bachelor in Qatar :-)). I think the most appropriate is MBAQ where "A" stands for Available... :-p

The menu were Nasi Dagang, Roti John, Mee Goreng, Bihun Goreng, Bubur Lambuk, Popia Goreng, Popia Basah, Seri Muka, Pulut Panggang and Pengat Pisang.

Alhamdulillah, within the two hours allocated to us to sell, all our stuff were sold out! :-) The gross revenue this time is a lot more compare to the three day sale we made in Dukhan few months back.

Enjoy some photos of preparation and event. You can read more details at

QA: A Week Into Ramadan

Alhamdulillah, just like the last two years, the Ramadan here, so far went smoothly for me. The weather, yes, it is hot, but you stay in door and only go out when needed only. Moreover, the working hours are shorten - not my company though. I still have to clock 8 hours a day but it is up to me to decide the time. This is something I like about working with people who understand to balance between work, personal and I would say, religion.

When I was working back in Malaysia, Ramadan is just another month. Some people I used to worked with ignoring the beauty of Ramadan. If you are non-Muslim I may be tolerate a bit, but being Muslim themselves, I feel it ia bit too much. What's wrong of giving your Muslim staff to go back earlier if they don't take their lunch hour? I am more into work philosophy of if you can deliver the work/task assigned to you in a good quality and within the time frame, I have no issue if you have to leave office early. Discuss with the immediate superior and if your superior is a "human being", I think he/she will understand. If not... errr..it is time to leave the project or company... :-)

That brings me to my plan of going back to Malaysia, or rather Singapore at this point of time. Having worked with people around the world, my inner voice keeps on saying avoid workign with "this kind" of people. But then, it is difficult not to work with "this kind" of people if you are back in Malaysia or Singapore... hmm... well.. that is a different story..

Anyway, for the last one week, I have chances to break my fast with few friends.

QA: Sahur and Kuih Raya

During the bowling session last Tuesday, the ladies have planned to bake kuih raya and group sahur on Thursday. Thursday is the only choice since Friday is an off day. Some of us work on Saturday, so Friday night is out too. The plan has been set and today is the day.

NN came to iftaar with me at my place and then, together with Zal, we went for a tarawih prayer at the usual mosque. The tarawih here, depending on the mosque finishes at 8:15pm.

At 9:30pm, we reached AI's mansion. AAH and his family were already there. AAH wife brought the Nasi Lemak that I have asked.. thank you.. thank you...

While the ladies preparing the stuff for the cookies, the guys were busy eating.. late supper :-) There were Nasi Lemak, Baked Macaroni, Chicken Curry and Bihun Sup.

Then, the ladies started mixing, pounding, heat the oven etc.. the guys were busy baby sitting and for me, dozed off into wonderland.. :-)) so guys,I was so tired.

At
3:30am, we had our sahur - feel like a very big happy family....

Everybody said goodbye after fajr prayer at the nearby surau....

Thank you all... I will treasure this moment forever....

QA: Farewell Hanis...

One of our friends, Hanis who is now working with the Oryx Head airlines is leaving us for good. To get everyone a chance to say goodbye to her, we arranged for a makan-makan at Zal's place. This makan-makan also was the last before Ramadan.

We had ikan masak lemak cili api, kerutuk daging, ayam masak merah, ikan kembung bakar with air asam, kerabu perut and ulam-ulam with sambal belacan and budu.

We invited quite a large number of people and were glad that most of them made it except for a couple from Exx0nMobil another one who have to go for a visa run.

We had lots of fun and amn sure Hanis was happy to see all of her friends there!

Hanis, good luck .. and if you bumped into me in either EY or AK, do say hi... :-))

QA: Visa Run BAH-DOH

The flight back from Bahrain was uneventful. We spent around 2 hours at Bahrain International Airport. The terminal building is bigger than Doha airport, but less characters. Not many activities on the tarmac. I spotted couple of airliners that do not fly to DOH i.e., Al Jazeera Airways, Cathay Pacific and Malaysia Airlines. Yup.. MH special flight during the summer I guess. It was a huge B777 and it is sooo beautiful - not as beautiful as the Queen of the Sky, B747 :-)

We had lunch at Jasmi's and shopped at the duty free. I bought one Salvy belt that cost me RM380. Pretty cheap. The rest of time, just walk around the terminal back and forth.

The boarding started around 16:20hrs for a 17:00hrs departure. The flight was originally scehduled to depart at Gate 12, but later changed to Gate 11. This time, the bird is A320 in normal GF colour.

The flight was full and we were seated in the middle of the aircraft, seat 17B and 17C. At 17A was a Filipino lady. Once everyone boarded, pushback commence and safety demo took place. Before that, the crew already passed around snacks and OJ for the passengers.

For the whole flight, I dozed off.. probably too tired. In fact, I fell asleep before the take-off only to wake up seconds from landing.

Once landed, we were bussed to the arrival terminal. Although the queue was quite long, it didnt take much time to pass through the immigration. Paid QAR100 and I was given a tourist visa for a month.

The baggage claim area was just like the veggie market I used to frequent. Full of people looking for their bags. In fact, my only checked in bag came out after 20 minutes of waiting. The queue for customs was long as well.

Few passengers got their luggage searched by the officers. Pretty emabrassing if you asked me. The area is right in front of the exit door.

Went outside and called our friend, KM to pick us up. Then, we joined NN, Shah & family for a dinner at Ponderosa...

Monday

BH: Day 2

Day 2 started around 8am with a breakfast at the hotel's coffee house, Al-Nafoora. The breakfast was just bread, butter, jam and tea/coffee - egg will be different charge.

After breakfast, we went out walking arrounding the Bab-al-Bahrain area. Visited a so called "Tourist Information" at Bal-al-Bahrain which turned out to be a souvenir shop. I bought a postcard to send to myself -> every where I go, instead f buying postcrd or any other souvenirs (fridge magnet is a must), I will mail myself a postcard from that country.

Then, we walked to the "souq" - hoping to see the traditional souq. However, I fond myself in the Rantau Panjang type five-foot path stores. It's nothing traditional at all. All the workers are from south asians and items on sale are clothing, bags, kitchen utensils and alike. I was a bit frustrated actually.

Then, on the way back to teh hotel, we stopped by at Ethnic Craft shop. First step into the shop, some handicraft Made In Thailand are on sale, further inside, we found out the word ethnic actually refers to Pakist4n cottage industries.

Went back to the hotel and requested for a late check out. We were only granted one hour extra. Since it was enarly 11am, we decided to check out straight away.

After freshen up, we went to Bahrain Fort. According to Zal, this fort is listed in UNESCO list. For what, I dont know. The fort is very near to the bustling Seef area. I have to admit that this fort is a bit different from other forts tht I have visited. The fort is pretty huge and we just made a round by car before stopping in front of the main entrance - just to see what inside it.

On the way back, stopped by at Bahrain Mall and then went to Al-Faleh Mosque - the Grand Mosque. The Grand Mosque is not as huge as Oman's Grand Mosque, but worth a visit. The only difference I noticed is the separation of teh ablution area/toilet from the main building. Al-Faleh's ablution area is situated around 100 meters south west from the main building.

After jamak prayer, we drove towards the airport. We have agreed to return the car before 3pm and we have less than 40 minutes to do so. Bahrain is not big, so we have plenty of time. However, we have not had unch yet and this local joint "Jasmi's" apparently very popular here. There is one nearby the airport, but time was not on our side. We needed to rush to return the car. I remember when I stopped by at BAH before, there's Jasmi's in the duty free area. Hope it is still there..

We reached the airport around 2:45pm, returned the car and proceeded to departure level for check in.

Well... thats end the weekend to Bahrain. Nothing much to see, just like Qatar. But it is good to visit other countries while you are in the region.

BH: Day 1

Our first stop after picking up our car was the National Museum. It is the first stop from Muharraq Island if you cross from the middle bridge. Sorry I can't remember to bridge name. Too lazy to open the map :-)

It costs 500fils per person to enter the Museum. Bahraini Dinar is broken into fils. BD1 = 1000fils.

There were six different section opened. The Natural History section was closed for unknown reason. We spent around 45 minutes at the museum learning the early era of Bahrain, previously known as Dilmun and later Tylos before been known now as Bahrain. It was an eye opening experience to learn the history of each country you visited. Before this I didn't know that Bahrain has very interesting history.

After the museum, it's time to go through the map to find the hotel. I have booked the Oriental Palace Hotel via the Asiatravel website for for RM220 per room incuding breakfast. To find the hotel, our key landmark is Yateem Center. Apparently, according to the (non-updated) Lonely Planet book, this is one of the well known center in Manama. Yeah right.. it was empty when we paid a visit the next day ;-)

Almost all the lanes around Bab-al-Bahrain are narrow and one way street. Enough only for one vehicle to pass by at one time. As compared to other Gulf countries that I have visited, I noticed there are not a lot of Filipinos in Bahrain. Hmmm... wonder why.....

Steping into the Oriental Palace Hotel is like stepping into 1970s era. From the deco, colour and the overall architecture, you can say that this hotel is too shy to embrace the new world.

After checked in, we went straight looking for food. We ended up having late lunch at KFC near Bab-al-Bahrain, a walking distance from our hotel. After that, we walked around the area and snapped few photos before went back to the hotel to freshen up.

Later, we drove to down south of Manama - hoping to find A'ali, a pottery center for Bahrain. Luck was not on our side and we could not find any pottery place despite being in A'ali area. later we were told that this cottage industries are home based. No wonder we could not find any place at all. Proabably it is Friday - everything is closed. We gave up and drove to nearby area to visit Riffa Fort. It was an easy find, thanks to the sign boards available along the street. As per any other forts in the world, it has the same design. Hmmm... wonder whether the same person designed the forts in the world during medieval time... hehehehe

I don't really know how to appreciate fort architecture, same way I don't know how to appreciate paintings. So, for me, it was merely a visit to fill up the itinerary. Being there, done that kind of thing :-)

Since we have more time before the sunset, we decided to drive further south to the Bahrain International Circuit. We passed by Bahrain University on the way to the circuit. Snap some photos and then we drove to the north towards the King Fahad Causeway to catch the sunset. According to the Lonely Planet (again), we should enjoy the sunset while sipping coffee at the Causeway Restaurant. So, that was our plan.

Paid BD2 toll, we drove along the causeway until the border. It was a beautiful sight, only on the way to the border. The causeway Restaurant is no where near what Lonely Planet said. Paid BD1 to go up to the observation deck. The weather was a bit hazy and we could not really see the Saudi side man-made island. From the view on the top of the tower, the Saudi side has more excitement. There are McD, Hardees and the island is bigger than the Bahrain side. Well, the causeway was built by Saudi using their funds. Of course they have every right how to design it :-))

We spent around 30 minutes there before driving back to Bahrain Island. On way back, we stopped by at Seef Mall. No visit is complete without a visit to the shopping mall. :-) After the mall, drove back to the hotel to freshen up and then went out to Hard Rock Cafe for dinner. Bought few souvenirs for friends and had a filling steak dinner there.

On way back, Zal decided to visit another fort on Muharraq Island, Arad Fort. Unfortunately we could not find it, probably due to lack of sign boards. It was already around midnight, we drove back to the hotel and dozed off until 8am the next morning....

QA: Visa Run.. DOH-BAH

On 31/8, I did a visa run to Bahrain. My visa expires on 6/9, Thursday, which is working day. Thus, reduce my chance to spend more time in Bahrain.

At first the plan was to meet BH there since he supposed to go on business trip to Manama. However, it was cancelled last minute and Zal decided to join me.

Zal booked Gulf Air for both of us. There are two reasons why Gulf Air, first being the cheapest ticket and second, I have not flown Gulf Air before. I found that Gulf Air uses B767 for this route for its 1000hrs turnaround flight and this added to my excitement . Although I have flown B767 on EY to AUH before, this one is a bit different. This is in original Gulf Air colour and configuration while the EY B767 was a leased.

Since this will be only a weekend retreat, I didn't do any packing earlier. As usual, I got back home late from work that Thrusday night. The nearer you are to your trip, your work load just get bigger and bigger.

Zal, being a true traveller, has prepared the itinerary a night before. Armed with Lonely Planet and internet, he managed to squeeze the whole Bahrain in less than two days. So, any readers out there needs assistnce with trip itienrary, contact Zal. :-))

Our journey to Bahrain started early Friday morning at 8am. NN picked us up from my apartment and drove us to the airport. The security check prior to the check in was a breeze but the check in itself was opposite. It was a long queue and very very slow. Only two counters for Economy class. It took us good 20 minutes to check in and that QAS guy assigned us to a windowless window seat!!! Aaaaarrghhhhh..... I hate that guy!!!!

For information, the check in counter staff can actually do anything they want.. they can assign you the worse seat and they can also assign you the best seat... Better be nice to them. When you feel that the time they take to check you in is too long, they are probably chatting with their counterpart about you or trying to surprise you when you get on board. Just like what happen to me...

Our flight is scheduled to depart 30 mins later than schedule. No harm. This means we can have breakfast and wander around the airport. Last time I used this departure terminal was for my trip to MCT last May. Quite few changes. New Oryx Lounge is now in operational and they have another Costa Coffee on the first floor.

Not many movement on the tarmac this morning. Two new airlines spotted.. Alexandria Airlines (from Alexandria Egypt) and Iran Air Tours (a charter to Shiraz). Others are the Oryx head tail aircrafts.

Around 10:15am, we went to the holding lounge. Before that, we browsed the duty free area and surprised to find out that one Malaysian actually won an Audi A8 last June under the Duty Free Bonanza Lottery. Lucky him!

We were bussed to the aircraft and within minutes, I took my windowless window seat. The flight was 50% full in Economy and majority of them were on transit. Only a handful of us disembarked at BAH.

The crew was not as great as EY or QR. There was no enthusiasm in serving the passengers or guests as EY referred us. Can you imagine one of the crew actually made faces during the safety demo? Not professional at all! If this is Ryan Air or any other western airlines, I do understand it...

The snacks were served before take off, thus giving the crew some relaxation during the flight. After all, we were only 20mins on air. The other 25-30 mintes were on ground. This kind of flight is normally known as charity flight.

It was an uneventful flight and I actually dozed off during that short flight. Landed in BAH on runaway 30R and in no time we were at gate 17.

No issues with immigration and Malaysians were given a two-week tourist visa on arrival for BD5 (~RM50).

We rented a Toyota Corolla 1.8L that cost us BD14 for 26 hours from Thrifty Car Rental. Zal has been designated as a driver and this gave me chance to relax... hehehee.. (actually they do not want accept my Qatar license.. they said it is a temporary license and only valid in Qatar).

First destination... Bahrain National Museum....
